Signs it’s Time to Repaint

  • Fading Paint
  • Hardened caulking

When the paint starts to break down – it can expose the underlying surface to a harsh environment. Without paint as a protectant, your home’s exterior can be subject things like to wood rot, water damage, insects like termites, and sun damage.

Depending on what type of material your home is comprised of you’ll want to follow these timing guides to help you decide when it’s time to repaint:

  • Cement fiberboard siding 10-15 years
  • Wood siding 3 to 7 years
  • Aluminum siding every 10-15 years unless under intense sunlight then every 5 years.
  • Stucco should be repainted every 5 to 6 years
  • Brick can be repainted every 15-20 years
  • Vinyl can be repainted with aluminum siding however it can also be replaced after 2-30 years

If it’s been less than these suggested time frames and your house still needs a refresh, you might consider doing a light power wash on it instead. This will remove dirt and grime or anything else that might deteriorate the paint. It’s also an easy way to keep your home looking fresh in between repaintings.

It’s important to keep up with your exterior paint because it’s the first thing that guests or potential buyers see. You also want to make sure that the paint barrier is at its best to protect your home from the elements. By following this list, now you know the problem areas to be aware of. You can also reference the timelines if it’s been a while since you’ve painted.
