Maintaining Your Deck All Summer Long

Posted on July 1, 2022

Everybody’s favorite outdoor spot to congregate is the deck! Whether you’re planning to grill up some burgers or catch some rays this summer, you’ll definitely want to make sure that you’ve prepped your space. In this blog, we’ll be talking about the different approaches you can take to maintaining your deck.

Wood maintenance is critical for the life of your deck stain.

If you’re trying to avoid a sad, faded deck, there are two styles you can choose from. Either way, your wood will be protected from the sun. You can apply a solid color stain, or you can apply an oil based, semi-transparent stain. Notice that we aren’t using the word paint. Since these are horizontal surfaces, we don’t recommend paint because it will peel in the elements. Meanwhile, stains will simply dissipate as they’re exposed to the elements for a more natural reduction in color.

Horizontal surfaces can chip and crack with regular paint. Research your exterior paint products before purchase! Above is a semi-transparent, oil-based stain.

Now that we understand the difference between deck stain and paint, let’s revisit the two kinds of stain that we recommend. There are semi-transparent stains and solid, paint-like stains. Oil based, semi-transparent stain soaks into the wood and allows you to see the wood grain through the color. Unfortunately though, for all that beauty, semi-transparent stains don’t last as long as solid stains. The benefit of a solid stain is that it provides better sun protection and also lasts longer.
