Winter Time Blues Front Door Makeover

Posted on January 14, 2021

We are in the second week of January and Christmas is way far in the rearview mirror. We’ve taken down the twinkle lights, the Christmas trees, the poinsettias, and the wreath. Everything looks so… blah.

What can we do to perk up the front of our home now that it’s just brown grass and dead plants?

In order to get a change of scenery this year, I took my family to quarantine safely in Charleston, South Carolina. We were so inspired by the adorable front door! It welcomed us into the space and it just really set the tone for a nice little staycation.

Here are some of the things that made the space look great. Follow these tips to spruce up your front door area!

Plants and Planters

Adding a little bit of greenery to your front door helps create a bright fresh inviting space as you’re welcoming guests… Although you can’t really welcome guests at this point in time. It’s still good practice for when you can! At the very least you can welcome yourself home with these with some beautiful greenery. Evergreen plants or other wintery flora will look lovely and add some life to the space.

Finding little spots to pump in some color wherever you can is always a great idea. You can select a beautiful plastic planter in any color of the rainbow or take a more traditional approach with a clay or ceramic pot. Take this opportunity to display your personality and set the stage for what awaits on the other side of the door.

Porch floor and ceiling

Haint blue is a fun, traditional coastal superstition. Essentially, the belief is that this shade of blue will help your house from being haunted because it matches the sky. This helps the spirits find their way out of your home.

We absolutely love that the ceiling in this porch area is painted in such a traditional shade. Even if you’re not on the beach, you can create an excellent conversation starter by choosing something similar. Or, be nontraditional and pick any color you choose!

The porch floor is another opportunity to add expressive color. Interestingly, concretes take a new coat of stain as easily as the front door gets a new coat of color! It’s an inexpensive and easy way to create dramatic change. Wooden porch floors are a little less versatile, but there are options if you’re looking to switch it up.

Door paint

Choosing a new color for your front door is easy and you can change it frequently. A new color for every season, if you like! We love this front door because it matches their yellow glider. And if you try something bold, like this yellow, and you find out you don’t love it… it’s just for a season! Mix it up when the weather changes. If you’re the type of person who gets down in the dumps with dreary weather, you need that bright color to lift your spirits. Go for it!

If you’re not ready to commit to something new, a fresh coat of trim paint around the front door always helps things feel clean and bright. By updating your trim you’re able to frame the space in a vibrant shade that creates contrast.

Quickly change the entire look of your door by updating your hardware! Change out your knob or lock for a new finish or handle… or you could just spray paint your existing hardware to a new finish! You can even update the light fixtures to match. An inexpensive can of hammered metal spray paint can update your look dramatically.

How adventurous are you? These colors are sure to keep things from being boring!

Personality Pieces

You can create serious character for your home by adding touches of personality around your front door. A decorative decal on the window, an antique doorbell, a plaque with a fun saying, or even a quirky welcome mat are all great ways to have your visitors say “Aww! How fun!” … Even if the only visitor you’re getting right now is the Amazon delivery truck.
