Recently our franchise owner, Sheri, was working on a color consultation for a woman who had just inherited a new home. She was planning on moving in and was looking for a way to blend the existing decor with her own pieces. She reached out to Sheri to find a way to do this through a color story. Sheri was able to help build a palette based around the items that she definitely wanted to stay – like the gorgeous mahogany furniture and antique rugs – and from there they were able to expand the scheme to incorporate all the rooms in the home.

To get the desired blend, Sheri asked the homeowner to identify a few specific items that just sang to her. The owner designated her leather purse as the thing that brought her the most joy. They then worked together to find colors that complemented all three objects – the purse, the rugs, and furniture. Once she had a color story in mind, she could shop both sets of furniture to find complementary pieces. By utilizing this strategy you’ll not only find a shortcut to your happy place, but you’ll also be able to reuse, incorporate, or even feature some of your existing decor that you already love.

Painting is also a great time to do some cleaning and downsizing. As you’re removing objects and moving furniture around, take some time to be intentional about what makes it back into the finished room. Keep your new paint color in mind and use a critical eye to see what decor you may be able to release.

Also, once you have your paint colors selected, don’t skip on the swatch samples. Painting an entire home is an expensive project so take some time and budget some money to make sure you love the colors you’re choosing. You’ll want to see the color in different lighting at different times of the day. Peel and Stick paint is a super-easy way to achieve this. We recommend Samplize or Sherwin Williams Color Snap as a resource.
