Transforming a 1970s Home in Western New York

CertaPro Painters® of WNY completed a dramatic exterior transformation for a single-family home in Lewiston, NY. Built in 1979, the home features several exterior materials, including aluminum siding, previously unpainted brick, trim, and wrought iron details. While the property was generally in good condition, years of exposure had left dust, mildew, and other contaminants across the exterior, requiring thorough cleaning and preparation before painting could begin.

The homeowner also wanted a noticeable color transformation. The aluminum siding on the rear and sides of the home would receive a darker new color, while the brick on the front side would be painted a bright white. Together, these contrasting updates would give the property a substantially different appearance while maintaining its original architectural character.

SCOPE OF THE PROJECT:

Preparation began with a light, water-based power wash to remove accumulated dirt, mildew, and contaminants. Windows, doors, light fixtures, and other areas not included in the painting scope were carefully masked and protected.

The crew then addressed several minor repairs. Holes in the aluminum siding on the right, left, and rear elevations were caulked, while Bondo was used to repair minor damage near the lower right portion of the garage overhead door. Another hole at the rear of the home, which had previously been covered with duct tape, was also properly repaired before painting.

Because the project involved several different substrates, the crew approached the painting process in stages. The aluminum siding was completed first, followed by the previously unpainted brick and finally the exterior trim. Products, finishes, and application methods were selected according to the requirements of each individual surface.

The front wrought iron post was also restored. Peeling paint was scraped away, rusted areas were wire brushed, and exposed bare metal was spot primed before the new finish was applied.

CHALLENGES AND SOLUTIONS:

The variety of exterior materials made preparation and product selection particularly important. Aluminum siding, bare brick, trim, repaired areas, and wrought iron each required a different approach to promote proper coating adhesion and produce a consistent finished appearance. With multiple colors, products, and finishes involved, the crew carefully tracked each portion of the project throughout preparation and application.

Weather presented another challenge. With rain appearing in the forecast, the three-person crew adjusted production to complete the necessary exterior work sooner than originally anticipated. Careful coordination allowed the project to be completed in just three days without sacrificing the detailed preparation required by the different surfaces.

SPECIAL EQUIPMENT & TECHNIQUES:

Various specialized ladder systems were used to safely access the taller sections of the residence. Surface-specific preparation techniques were also critical to the project, including light power washing, caulking, Bondo repairs, masonry preparation, rust removal, wire brushing, and spot priming of exposed metal.

Careful masking and protection were especially important due to the number of colors and materials involved in the transformation.

The Final Results

The completed project gave this 1979 Lewiston home a striking new exterior while addressing years of accumulated wear and several minor surface defects. Darker aluminum siding created a fresh foundation for the new color scheme, while the lighter painted brick provided contrast and helped brighten the front of the home. Refreshed trim and a restored wrought iron post completed the transformation.

In just three days, CertaPro Painters of Western New York combined detailed preparation, minor repairs, and surface-specific painting techniques to create a cohesive new look across the home’s multiple exterior materials.
