Exterior Painting and Restoration Project in East Amherst, NY
In August 2023, our team completed a 15 day exterior painting and restoration project for a two story single family home in East Amherst, NY. Built in 1984, this 1,898 sq ft home with 3,210 sq ft of living space had begun to show clear signs of wear from years of exposure to Buffalo’s weather conditions. The goal of the project was to restore the home’s appearance while addressing underlying structural issues through detailed carpentry repairs and thorough surface preparation.
The exterior wood siding had faded significantly over time, with grime and mildew buildup present across multiple surfaces. Areas of the home, including the siding, soffits, and fascia, had sustained damage from carpenter bees and woodpeckers. In addition, several windows and window sashes had begun to deteriorate, requiring attention before painting could begin.
Challenges and Solutions:
This project required more than a standard repaint. Before any coatings were applied, the team completed a full power wash to remove dirt, debris, and mildew. Extensive carpentry repairs followed, including wood replacements across multiple areas of the home. Smaller repairs were handled using wood filler, followed by sanding to create a smooth and consistent surface.
One of the biggest challenges was identifying the correct materials and dimensions for the various repairs, as well as coordinating delivery to the job site. Matching the original exterior color also proved difficult due to years of fading. To solve this, the team applied multiple test samples on site and worked closely with the homeowner to select the most accurate and appealing match.
All loose and peeling paint was scraped away, and surfaces were sanded to ensure proper adhesion. Any exposed wood was spot primed using Sherwin Williams A100 Oil Based Primer to create a strong foundation for the final coat.
PROJECT SCOPE:
This was a full exterior project that included T1 11 siding, soffits, fascia, windows and window frames, door frames, garage door and frame, and rear deck structures. Additional areas such as deck spindles, steps, benches, and handrails were also addressed as part of the restoration.
SPECIAL EQUPMENT & TECHNIQUES:
Due to the height and layout of the home, the crew utilized specialized ladder systems to safely access multiple elevated areas. A dumpster was also used on site to manage and dispose of damaged wood and debris from the carpentry work.
TIMELINE:
Our team completed this project in 15 days, including approximately three weeks dedicated to carpentry repairs and painting preparation.
