Posted on November 15, 2021
The kitchen is often one of the most important rooms in the home. Kitchens are commonly used as gathering areas and a hub for family activity. A modern and pleasing kitchen goes a long way to boost the appeal of a home during a sale, or to impress holiday visitors and guests. Over the years, kitchen design trends tend to come and go, but there are a few styles that have stood the test of time. In this article we will cover various aspects of the kitchen and how they can be updated via painting projects to get an entirely new look and feel.
Painting Walls & Ceilings in Kitchens
Once you have a wall color selected, you will need to decide on a type of paint and a sheen for the kitchen painting project. Modern latex paints offer durability and low/no VOC (air pollutants) options. Most painters opt for latex for these reasons. Kitchen walls also need some attention to what sheen to select. Sheen refers to the finish of the paint and has a variety of options including:
High Gloss – very durable, easy to clean, stain resistant. The gloss of the finish will show flaws in the walls easier. Best used for woodwork and trim, backsplashes, and cabinets.
Semi-gloss – Less durable than high-gloss, but stronger than other options. Good for use on doors, trim, cabinets, and woodwork.
Satin – A very popular choice for interior walls in our service area (Western New York). Satin offers a softer appearance that is not as glossy as the above 2 options. The finish is less resistant to moisture so it is not the best choice for areas that may get wet (behind a sink). For areas away from the sink, satin is a good choice for the interior walls on a kitchen project.
Eggshell – Very similar to satin, most customers can not tell the difference between eggshell and satin in a side-by-side comparison. It offers similar features as satin.
Flat – Flat paint is generally not recommended unless your kitchen walls have many flaws. Flat paint does the best job of masking imperfections in the wall but has the least durability of all the options. Flat paint can scuff easily.

Updating Kitchen Cabinets with Cabinet Painting & Restoration Projects
Kitchen cabinet painting and restoration projects are a great way to give new life to the kitchen. Replacing cabinets can be very expensive, often times the construction and wood work are good on dated looking cabinets. In cases where the cabinets are of quality construction, replacement may not make sense. Cabinets see a lot of use, they are high-touch, high-impact areas of the kitchen that is best handled by a professional team. Of the sheens mentioned above, it is generally recommended cabinets get either high gloss or semi-gloss finishes to give them added durability to dents and dings.
Cabinet color trends change with time, but a few colors are very popular right now that have proven to stand up to time. A few options include:
White Kitchen Cabinets
White painted cabinets are by far the most popular choice among customers of ours in the WNY region in the last few years. White offers a classy and timeless look that brightens up the kitchen space and provides an inviting atmosphere.
Gray Kitchen Cabinets
Another popular option in the last few years is to have cabinets painted gray. Gray on cabinets is usually a darker slate style gray that works against a variety of wall colors and countertop styles.
Green Kitchen Cabinets
Green is a more modern option that has been starting to trend in kitchen cabinet projects in the last 3 years. The overall look offers a similar aesthetic to gray cabinets but with a extra hint of color that gives a natural feel to the kitchen. This color can work well against white walls and countertops.
