Metal Equipment Rust Removal and Painting for Pine Pharmaceuticals
In May 2025, CertaPro Painters® of WNY completed an industrial equipment restoration project at Pine Pharmaceuticals, a leading FDA-registered 503B outsourcing facility located in Tonawanda, New York. The company operates a modern 75,000-square-foot production facility designed to help address drug supply challenges while maintaining strict quality and operational standards.
As part of maintaining safe and reliable operations, the facility required restoration and protective coating of an exterior pallet lift used in daily material handling. Because the equipment plays an important role in supporting production and logistics, ensuring its structural integrity and visibility was a priority.
SCOPE OF THE PROJECT:
The project focused on restoring multiple metal components of the pallet lift, including the railings, metal deck, underside extension arms, ground border framing, and folding ramps.
The process began with thorough power washing to remove accumulated dirt and debris from the equipment. Once cleaned, all rusted areas were treated using power wire wheel brushing to remove corrosion and prepare the metal surfaces for coating.
After preparation was completed, the crew applied a primer coat to all metal surfaces followed by full coverage topcoats. The coating system was applied to every accessible section of the pallet lift—from the top deck surfaces to the underside structural elements—to ensure complete protection.
The final coating system used Sherwin-Williams Semi-Gloss Acrolon Urethane in Safety Yellow along with a custom-matched gray. This industrial-grade coating provides excellent abrasion resistance, chemical resistance, and UV stability, helping protect the equipment from harsh environmental conditions while maintaining long-term durability.
CHALLENGES AND SOLUTIONS:
The primary challenge of the project involved the extensive rust buildup across the pallet lift structure. Effective corrosion removal was essential to ensure proper adhesion and prevent future coating failure.
The team focused on meticulous preparation, carefully cleaning and conditioning all metal surfaces until they were clean, dry, and ready to accept the new coating system. This detailed preparation work ensured the durability and longevity of the finished paint system.
SPECIAL EQUIPMENT & TECHNIQUES
To properly prepare the metal surfaces, the crew utilized power wire wheel brushing, a specialized method for cleaning and conditioning metal. This technique aggressively removes rust, old coatings, and scale while preserving the integrity of the base metal surface.
The method creates an ideal surface profile that allows primer and finish coatings to bond effectively, ensuring a strong and long-lasting protective finish in demanding industrial environments.
