Garage Renovation

Adding square footage to your home doesn’t always mean costly construction. Finish your garage to make it feel like an extra room rather than an afterthought. Typically, in most homes, this is the one room that is left with raw concrete and virgin drywall as a desolate home to boxes of holiday decorations and too many spiders. Put time in cleaning, organizing and painting to make the garage feel like an extension of your home instead of the catchall it’s become. Here is how to extend your home with a finished garage.

A finished garage can be a pristine place for the car, a game room for the kids or refuge for dad to tinker. No matter what you choose to do with your new space, the renovation is the same. Since garages typically come to you as messy concrete and basic framed walls, the sky’s the limit. Plan your work at the same time to create a cohesive color palette.

Getting Started

Make sure your garage is comfortable and livable year round.

Livability

Before you take on the project of updating your garage interior, look for the elements that will make the room comfortable. Most garages are wired with minimal outlets. Make sure they are in convenient locations or plentiful enough for your needs. Add any necessary climate the room requires including an electric fireplace, fans, insulation or portable air conditioners.

Choosing Colors

There are no right or wrong colors when it comes to the garage. Some homeowners choose to go with an extension of their home’s interior colors. Others choose to give the garage its own personality. Many homeowners look at the room for its own style options, since there are rarely eye sight lines to deal with.

Walls

Untreated, unfinished drywall is not only an eye sore, it’s an unprotected area. Adding paint to a wall not only makes the room feel like a true living space, it also keeps moisture and messes at bay. Without paint, the wall is subject to soaking up spills or leaks. So adding paint is not just for cosmetic appeal.

That doesn’t mean it has to be unappealing. Virgin drywall will mean one thing: prime. Primer is necessary to give the drywall a good tooth to adhere the paint. Working in garages can also mean a lack of natural light. Oftentimes, garages have limited, if any windows. So adding a simple but light and cheerful color brings in a light feeling.

Color schemes are available in a wide range of colors and styles. Adding stylish elements like a chair rail, shelving or geometric design can really up the ante in the room.

Floors

Basic poured concrete feels cold and drab. The addition of epoxy flooring allows you to finish the room’s look with a floor that looks great while standing up to typical garage usage. Epoxy coatings come in a variety of colors and finishes that have broad usage like parking a car, or having a playdate with your kids. It’s stain and water resistant while giving you an ability to easily clean up messes with a broom or mop.

Epoxy floors are chosen over a painted floor because of their durability. Painted floors need to be repainted fairly regularly. The chemicals of a garage, maintenance and cleaning can damage the paint film and cause it to break down. Epoxy floors offer all the customization of paint while creating a more durable finish. Slip resistant and traction additions are available for safety concerns.

Ceilings

Another often overlooked area of the garage is the ceiling. If there are stains or signs of damage, take the extra step to correct the problems. A fresh new coating of paint will make the room feel brand new again. Skipping the ceiling will give you a great finished project, but it will feel less than done.

Doors

The inside of a garage door seems a wasted space unless you can style it up. If your door is in poor condition, now is the time to consider a replacement. If it’s not – don’t forget it when you are accounting for your painting color palette. Painting the interior of the door a complementary color adds depth and interest to your new ‘room’ and makes the room feel truly finished. Get creative with your paint choices here.

Storage

Lastly, now that your room is nearly ready to go, add some storage for all of the items that were in it when you started. Shelves for boxes, pegboards for tools and hooks for bicycles. Some cabinets can give you a good hiding place for surplus supplies in the home.

Brick Painting and Staining

Bricks are commonly used in our area for their ability to withstand extreme weather while looking great. Overtime, the stones can lose their color and vibrance, especially outdoors. UV rays, heat and moisture can leach color from your bircks if you don't step in to help. This is where our painters come in with brick painting and staining services.
