Bathroom Blues: Choosing the Right Bathroom Color

Posted on July 31, 2019

Bathrooms often times feel the blues when it’s time to paint. They are the unsung heroes of your home, so show them some love with a new wall color to dress it up. Here’s how to avoid the bathroom blues by choosing the right bathroom color.

Don’t feel limited by the size of the room for your color choices. Long standing painting lure says a small room with little ambient light and small square footage is relegated to white and pastel. Be brave and break out of these old ideals. If you plan appropriately, you’ll be able to enjoy a vivid room in no time.

Keep in mind when tinkering with color palettes, some things are non-negotiable. Changing the color of a tub or sink is far more complicated than a wall color. Work with what you have in the appliances of your room. It will allow your room update to be much more budget friendly.

Use a Color Wheel

It’s easy to make sure your chosen colors complement each other. With the color wheel, the colors across from each other are complementary and will work together in your color scheme. As a rule, any color scheme should include 3 colors: a neutral, a vivid or deep and an accent. Distribute them throughout the room in a 70/20/10 amount.

Neutral

To update the neutral look, try using all neutral. Mixtures of white, cocoa and barely green is a great way to incorporate three neutral colors together into an upscale palette. With two neutrals, use them in a 70/30 mix. There are very chic uses of grey and white or beige and brown in this form. If your room is particularly small, this is an easy way to step up the style without overwhelming the eyes.

Bright

Energize your bathroom by choosing two complementary bright colors. Combinations like orange and blue work well in close quarters and create an energetic buzz in the room. If your room is really small, tone it down with white. This works well with white appliances and floors mixed with blue and orange paint.

Darks

Small rooms can be painted dark colors in a trendy and appealing way without making them feel like dungeons. Use brighter color wheel colors to keep the room airy. Try a deep brown with a bright green to match a light and dark together in harmony. If you choose to go all dark, think of adding some extra lighting in the room.

Nature

Use nature to inspire your room. There are great colors like robin’s egg blue or sea foam green to give your bathroom the feeling of a far away woodland cottage. Soft, natural colors ease the angular shapes of a bathroom.

Balance

If you are drawn to particular colors, use them. It’s your home after all. When you choose your three colors, if you like bright, pair it with a light color to take the tone down a bit. Hot pink and apple green have been successfully used this way, while adding some whimsy to the room.
