General Questions About Paint and Preparation

Which is better – oil paint or latex paint?
Oil and latex paints each have advantages. Oil-based paint is ideal for covering heavy stains or sealing surfaces, often used as a primer. It offers durability but takes longer to dry and cure. Oil paints have a stronger odor and are less flexible than latex.
Latex paint is preferred for most applications. It is widely available in many finishes, dries faster, resists humidity, is low odor, and is easier to clean up.

What types of preparation are needed for my house?
Preparation depends on the project scope. Exterior prep includes power washing, scraping, wood repair, caulking, and painting with brushes or sprayers as needed. Interior prep involves moving furniture, protecting floors and fixtures, drywall repair, sanding, taping, and caulking. Proper prep ensures a smooth, long-lasting finish.

Does all the old paint need to be removed before repainting?
No. Spot preparation is sufficient. Peeling or bubbled areas are scraped, and flawed areas are lightly sanded. Clean and prepared surfaces allow new paint to adhere properly.

What is a ‘paint system’ and which is right for my project?
A paint system includes primer and topcoat(s) tailored to the surface condition. Damaged or new surfaces usually require primer; sound surfaces may only need topcoat. Discuss options with your estimator for optimal results.

What is the purpose of primer and when is it needed?
Primer creates a uniform base for paint, ensuring adhesion and smooth coverage. It’s essential when switching from oil to latex, painting new surfaces, covering saturated colors, or sealing stains. Primer also protects surfaces and extends paint longevity.

How many coats of paint are needed?
Two coats are standard, ensuring full color coverage, durability, and long-lasting results.

What is elastomeric paint?
Elastomeric paint is water-based and flexible, allowing surfaces to expand and contract without cracking. It is often waterproof and commonly used on masonry, stucco, and wood.

How long does paint take to dry?
Drying time varies with humidity, airflow, temperature, and paint type. Latex paint typically dries to the touch in 1–2 hours, with full handling in 4–6 hours. Oil-based paint can take 4–8 hours to dry and up to 24 hours to cure.

How long should a paint job last?
With proper preparation and quality paint, a paint job can last 5–15 years, averaging 10 years. Longevity depends on UV exposure, weather, and humidity.

How can I increase the longevity of my paint?
Keep surfaces clean, address moisture or mold issues, and protect high-traffic areas with barriers. Proper maintenance preserves paint and prevents damage.

Will I save money if I buy the materials?
Not usually. CertaPro has established supplier relationships, providing cost-effective, high-quality materials and handling sourcing, which saves time and stress.

Is there a difference between hand-brushed and sprayed paint?
Yes. Hand brushing offers control but may leave marks, while spraying provides a uniform finish. Both methods are often combined for optimal coverage.

What does VOC mean?
VOC stands for Volatile Organic Compound, which can cause paint odor and potential irritation. Low or zero VOC paints reduce odor and are safer indoors.

Are more expensive paints better?
Not always. Paint quality is often less important than proper surface preparation. Specialty paints may be necessary for high humidity or wear areas. CertaPro recommends products based on project needs, not price alone.

Questions About Access, Color Selection, and Lead

How will the crew reach difficult areas?
CertaPro uses poles, ladders, scaffolding, booms, or lifts to safely reach all areas, depending on project height and complexity.

How is interior access handled?
CertaPro works with homeowners to ensure comfort, including scheduling, daily cleanup, and optional external lockbox access for trusted entry.

Is there lead paint on my house? How is it handled?
CertaPro tests for lead if suspected and follows proper containment procedures. They hold DEQ Renovation, Repair, and Painting certification for safe lead handling.

Can CertaPro help with color selection?
Yes. They offer sample swatches, digital mockups, and consultations to visualize colors on your home. Existing color consultants can collaborate, and paint matching is available even if not from Sherwin Williams.

What if I am not happy with the colors after painting?
CertaPro can adjust colors if needed. They encourage communication with the crew to address concerns before proceeding with the next step.

Are there extra charges for multiple colors?
Additional colors may increase labor and prep time. The estimate reflects the scope and complexity of color schemes.

Will I receive leftover paint?
Yes, any remaining paint is left for future touch-ups. Paint used is documented, and a limited two-year warranty covers the work.

Questions About the Process and Our People

What happens after meeting the estimator?
The estimator prepares a detailed project estimate, usually sent via email within a few days for review.

How do I proceed after approving the proposal?
Sign and return the proposal or respond affirmatively via email. A deposit secures your project on the schedule, and the team coordinates start dates with you.

What experience do foremen and painters have?
CertaPro teams are experienced professionals, including journeymen painters with expertise in carpentry, drywall, and staining. Some have worked with the company for over 17 years.

How are concerns addressed during the project?
The crew encourages open communication. Concerns should be raised to the team immediately. The office is also available for support throughout the project.

How long will the project take?
Timeline depends on repair work, project scope, number of colors, and interior vs exterior work. Interior projects are usually straightforward; exterior timelines may vary with weather conditions.

Tom and his team were so responsive and respectful. They completed the job within a couple days and were competitively priced. If you’re looking for a painting team that has both quality and speed, look no further!
