How often should you paint your house interior

Posted on May 17, 2019

Your interior walls and ceilings can take quite a bit of abuse throughout the year. The most cited reason for painting the interior of your home is wear and tear or to update the color. But really, how often should you paint your house interior?

Because there are no elements on the inside of your home, it needs repainted far less often than outside. You will most likely repaint your home because you’re looking to change the color or because of water or other damage to the walls.

Walls

There are some rooms in your home that will need repainted more often than others. Due to the wear and tear, you’re kitchen and bathroom will need more work than bedrooms. Also notoriously dinged up rooms like the foyer and hallway will need painted more often. Water and food messes mean these paint jobs will probably only last 3-4 years.

The hallways in your home are dinged, scuffed and dented fairly often. Repairs prior to painting are crucial to the job. To keep it looking fresh, choose a satin finish paint and plan to redo it every couple of years.

When you paint the living room or dining room with a high quality paint, you’re room should be in good looking condition for years. Typically manufacturers estimate the paint to be good for 5-7 years.

Bedrooms will depend on whether you have kids. Adult bedrooms receive less use and abuse. Because of that, the paint will last much longer. Kids are in their rooms more often and also are known to take a crayon to the closet fairly frequently. Because of this, you should consider a satin sheen on any paint in a child’s room. This way you’ll be able to clean it more easily. Even so, the room’s paint will probably not last more than 2-3 years.

Ceilings

Ceilings are not exposed to dirty fingers or brushes against them like walls are. Your ceiling will change color through from sunlight and moisture causing a yellowing effect. You can expect ceiling paint to last about twice as long as wall paint giving it up to 10 years. Because the most common color is flat white, the room will look 20% brighter with a new coating.

Trim & Baseboards

Trim, baseboards, window frames and cabinets are the most often damaged pieces of wood in your home. Keep them looking beautiful by painting them every 2-4 years, knowing that they receive the most foot traffic and abuse. Pros say you should keep leftover trim paint to allow for repairs and touch ups between full paintings. This will keep your trim looking crisp.
