Choosing colors for your house can be overwhelming. Its often in the details where we see our customers start to get lost or frustrated, choosing a trim color to pair with the primary house color is a common item that our customers need assistance with. The good news is trim colors tend to be simple, here are some tips to keep in mind when thinking about what color to choose.

Contrasting Colors

Before you start, decide if you want your trim to stand out against the house, or blend in. Either direction can work well and provide a great curbside aesthetic. When blending you generally don’t want to use the exact same color as the house to avoid a mono-color home, a few shades darker or lighter often works well.

For a high contrast look, use a color wheel to get some ideas. Most paint stores offer samples to hold up against the home and to compare against the primary house color. If using a color wheel, colors directly across from each other are complementary pairs, and good ones to consider for trim colors. Good high contract options include both black and white depending on the primary color of the home. Shades of gray are also very popular.

Monochromatic and Multiple Finishes

One easy way to make a palette stylish and pulled together is to work within one color family. Use the same color in varying finishes. For example, an exterior painted in matte gray with a glossy gray for shutters and doors will look great.

Neutral Colors

Neutral trim will tone down brighter colors on other parts of the home. Its also generally a safe bet for when getting the house ready to sell. Keeping the colors universally appealing is recommended if the house will be going up for sale.

Bright Colors

Do not feel afraid of bright colors. If you are not comfortable with neutral, try this. Choose a neutral color to put on your walls. Incorporate a bright color on shutters, bricks, doors or other architectural elements. As a plus, a bright red or black front door can get you more money at a closing on the sale of your house.

Don’t Forget You

Whether you’re keeping your house or preparing for a sale, remember the house is still yours. Choose colors that appeal to your taste. You should feel happy coming home to it, not matter what the color specialists say.
