Small Real Estate Paint Changes for Big Updates

Posted on October 18, 2021

Tips for selling a home on a budget, or recently purchased a home and want to just freshen up.

You do not have to sacrifice the looks of your new home or the home you’re planning on selling.  Instead, follow some of the suggestions below to make your home look as appealing as possible on a budget you can control. Here are some small real estate paint changes for big updates.

Kitchen

Sand and repaint cabinets- this can typically be done for less than 50% of the cost of removing old cabinets and installing new cabinets. We normally suggest a bright white such as Sherwin Williams’ Snowbound (SW 7004) or Dover White (SW 6485) or if you prefer Benjamin Moore, look into Simply White (OC-117).

As for kitchen islands, while there is a noticeable trend to have the island be an accent with a shade of blue or other attractive color, we suggest keeping it simple for your budget and to attract as many people as possible to your color choices- of you’re selling.  They or you can always spend the money to add a personalized accent with the island.  However, if you decide to make the island an accent, we absolutely love Sherwin Williams Lauren’s Surprise (SW 6791)Misty (SW 6232) and Benjamin Moore Twilight (2058-10).  They’re very different colors, but both compliment white cabinets nicely. Replace faucet, counter top, backsplash, appliances- these are relatively inexpensive ways to update the appearance of your kitchen, which is often the most important room in the house.

Whole House

Repose Gray paired with dark wood floors.

While it’s a big task, removing wallpaper can make a huge difference in the feeling of your home. Paint over colors to make rooms more neutral.  Some favorite neutrals are:

Sherwin Williams

  • Alabaster (SW 7008)
  • Oyster White (SW 7637)
  • Mindful Gray (SW 7016)
  • Repose Gray (SW 7015)
  • Sea Salt, which is great for SWFL (6204)
  • Quicksilver (SW 6245)

Benjamin Moore

  • Pale Oak (OC-20)
  • Edgecomb Gray (HC 173)
  • Revere Pewter (HC 172)

Additional home upgrades that can make a big impact include:

  • Changing lighting fixtures
  • Painting your trim and ceilings for extra pop and brightness
  • Pressure washing the exterior of house, lanai, pool surround and walk and driveways
  • Cleaning the windows
  • Painting the front door
  • Painting the  mailbox
