If it has been awhile since you attempted an interior painting project, you might not be aware that special paints are available for your home. What is a specialty paint? These paints are designed for a specific purpose and will usually contain additives not present in standard paint. These paints typically provide a unique texture, color, or function, and are often used for specific rooms in the home. Today we will discuss the most common forms of specialty paint and why you might want to use them.

Textured Paint

Textured paint has grown in popularity in recent years as homeowners look for new painting ideas. These paints contain some form of medium, like sand or other filler, to give paint a texture beyond the sheen. These paints are often a flat or matte finish, and may require special application techniques. Many of these paints are considered “designer” paints, as they may offer very unusual shades not offered elsewhere. These paints are often designed to replicate other materials like leather, and are generally used as is, meaning they should not be thinned. These paints are popular where guests tend to gather, such as living rooms and dens. However, these paints can be more difficult to touch up due to the texture, and are more difficult to keep clean for the same reason.

Mold and Mildew Resistant Paint

Mold and mildew resistant paints essentially encapsulate the surface and often include an anti-bacterial additive as well. These paints are primarily for hot, humid areas like bathrooms, but they can be used anywhere in the home. These paints form a durable surface similar to caulk, which allows the surface to dry more completely than standard paint. Since moisture cannot penetrate the paint, mold and mildew is greatly reduced. However, these paints have a similar downside to textured paints, in that touch ups can be more difficult to hide.

Blackboard/Glowing Paint

You may have already guessed it, but these paints are usually found in children’s bedrooms. Blackboard paint, for example, dries to a finish similar to a blackboard which can be drawn on and then easily removed. This type of specialty paint is usually used sparingly, but it can be used virtually anywhere. Another popular specialty paint typically includes phosphorescent powder, which allows the paint to glow in the dark. This type of paint is very popular with small children and can often be found on ceilings to depict a night sky.
