Spring WELLNESS for your home

We are almost there. Daylight savings is March 14th, allowing more daylight, and more time to get outside. I know I personally am revving up to get out, dig in the dirt and start the winter cleanup. As a paint expert I also know it is a great time to get up close and personal with our home’s condition, not only with the yard and flower beds but also with our home’s exterior surfaces. Let’s face it, as the weather gets nicer our lives get that much busier with activities that keep us on the go and we may not take notice of the wear and tear especially from a distance.

A yearly inspection “check-up” of your home’s exterior surfaces and the paints and stains that are protecting them, is key to home maintenance and the longevity of building materials.

Exterior paints and stains have a time limit, approximately 5-8 years, in providing the proper protection of your home’s surfaces. Unlike interior paints, exterior coatings are worn down year after year by the UV exposure of the sun and the harsh ever changing New England weather. Horizontal surfaces like our decks, many times, require yearly attention. Once any exterior coating is compromised the substrates on your home are exposed and can be damaged requiring significant repair or replacement.

Not only does our harsh New England weather wreak havoc on your home’s substrate, but it also makes the panting season tough to predict and shorter than most areas in our country. With a short exterior painting season and an unprecedented housing market, reputable Rhode Island contractors’ schedules will fill up fast this year. I recommend doing your home’s wellness inspection soon and if needed, getting a timely jump on your project’s research.

Below is a suggested list with coordinating pictures to determine the Wellness of your home.
