Commercial Case Study
Jet Fuel Tanks
The Task:
CertaPro Painters of Southern New Hampshire is no stranger to big projects, and this project involved painting two large jet fuel tanks. Frequent flights over the years have caused the color to fade, and atmospheric conditions meant that rust had accumulated on the tanks as well. The metal stairways and metal piping were also similarly worn down. Our professional team was tasked with restoring the tanks to proper conditions to make them look brand new.
The Work:
Work began in May 2019. For a project of this magnitude, CertaPro Painters of Southern New Hampshire had to use special equipment. A 120 foot boom lift and 32 foot metal staging was used to get proper elevation for the workers to begin. Due to the 4 foot high concrete containment wall, wire brushes were used to clear the flaking metal off of rusted areas. Once cleared of flaking metal and rust, these areas were treated with rust inhibitor products to make sure the areas remained clear and prevent future weather damage. Special Sher-Cryl protective marine coatings by Sherwin Williams were used for the treatment.
A special challenge presented was the drainage of the fuel tanks. To do this, our team coordinated with the owners to drain the fuel tanks of their contents for safety reasons, so that the painting and restoration could continue as planned. Due to the nature of the work, the project itself spanned over 3 months to allow proper drainage of the tanks. This allowed the team to paint each tank within the span of one week per tank.
Final result:
Both tanks and accommodating features were treated, and painted within one week each given their respective accommodations. The tanks are now restored to their former glory, and the treatment used ensures that standard for years to come.
