DIY Spring Exterior Checklist for Homeowners
Posted on April 27, 2020
Since the sun is high in the air and temperatures are on the rise, we are all anxious to get outdoors. While spring cleaning inside usually takes precedence over the exterior, it’s a good time to take to the outside for a DIY Spring Exterior Checklist.
Spend some time soaking up the rays while inspecting the exterior of your home. Allowing these tasks to slide for several seasons can give bigger problems a chance to fester. This means you could be dealing with more expensive repairs in the long run.
The first step to your exterior checklist for spring is to do a thorough inspection of every nook and cranny.
Roof and Gutters
If you are comfortable with getting on your roof, now would be a good time to get up there and take a look. Look for any shingles that are damaged, in addition to any mildew, algae, or other growth that indicates standing water.
Gutters and downspouts should be cleaned out to rid them of dirt and debris. This will save your home from overflow and water sitting against the walls.
Your paint will let you know when it is struggling to preserve your substrate. Issues like chipping and peeling are signs that your paint is failing and moisture is getting inside the paint. Pay attention to areas around your foundation where water might be pooling and causing damage as well.
Other Structures
Now is the time to check any outdoor structures for soundness. This is especially true for wooden pagodas, sheds or decks. Look for rot or loose or damaged boards. Make repairs now before you power wash and stain the item for summer use. Proper care can allow you to get a few more seasons out of these items.
Pseudo Interior
Take time to inspect the crawl spaces and attics for proper sealing. Look for water, discoloration, or moisture in these areas. These signs can quickly develop into a mold infiltration and make a bigger mess. Make sure leaks are repaired before corrective action. In basements, consider adding a moisture barrier paint to walls to keep humidity out.
Yard
Landscaping might be starting to make a comeback from the winter months. Take time to trim bushes, hedges, and branches away from your home. A good rule of thumb is that you should be able to fit between the landscaping and your walls. This will help to avoid moisture intrusion and pests.
When it comes to pests, sealing caulk and trimming greenery will make a big difference in their ability to get into your home. If you do find damage or droppings, it’s a good idea to consult a professional.
