CertaPro Painters of Southern Alberta was proud to be part of the recent refresh at the Acadia Valley Grain Elevator

The problem to be solved:

CertaPro Painters recently completed the Acadia Valley Grain Elevator which is a former Alberta Wheat Pool Elevator that’s been converted into a museum and Tea House. The Elevator has been completely restored to working condition but is not operable. Within the Site are a Tea House, Gift Shop, Museum and a Restored Canadian National Railway Caboose has been placed on the former trackbed of the now-defunct Canadian National Railway. The existing coating on the Elevator was faded and peeling. The painted signage was also faded and in need of refreshing. Loose boards needed to be secured prior to prepping and painting.

Problem solver solution:
The process included removing all loose and peeling paint, Any boards that were loose needed to be secured prior to painting all areas the familiar Grain Elevator Green that makes this impressive structure stand out from miles away. The job included restoring the lettering and painted signage on each side of the elevator. The painting involved an airless spray application using an acrylic product designed to have some flex with the movement of the building which is constant in the hot summer sun and cold winters, You can definitely hear it when you’re up close. Most of the work was done from a boom lift

Additional Challenges:
Challenges included the height of the Elevator which stretched up to 140ft in some areas. There are obstacles on the ground and uneven surfaces that presented further challenges. The weather also played a role in that the wind could pick up to 80 Km’s per hour at times depending on which side of the structure we were on.

Final result:
Despite all of the challenges Dave and his team did an outstanding job. The crew knew this one would be an interesting project but when you have a hand in restoring and protecting a historic structure it makes it that much better. Many thanks to everyone at the Prairie Elevator Society and the Town of Acadia Valley for your hospitality while painting was being done. We encourage anyone in Southern Alberta to add this to your list of day trips and enjoy a piece of Alberta History.
