Case Study: Ballard Residential Restoration Project

Scope of Work

This project focused on restoring and painting the original 1924 wood siding of a classic craftsman home. The following tasks were performed:

• Paint Shaving: Due to multiple layers of paint, improper caulking, and unsuitable sheen from previous jobs, the old paint needed to be fully stripped. Using a specialized tri-bladed grinder connected to a HEPA vacuum, we safely removed the old paint without spreading dust or debris.
• Sanding: After stripping, the wood was sanded extensively to smooth and prepare the surface for priming.
• Priming and Painting: Once fully prepped, the home was carefully primed and painted, restoring a durable and beautiful finish that reflects the home’s original character.

Unique Challenges

Removing layers of century-old paint presented unique challenges, particularly in addressing lead paint. Safety precautions included outfitting the team in Tyvek suits and respirators throughout the stripping process. Additionally, “Paint Shaving” required specialized equipment and a meticulous approach to avoid damaging the preserved siding beneath. Despite these challenges, our team completed the project with minimal disruption to the surrounding environment.

Special Techniques and Equipment

The age of the home and the presence of lead paint required the use of specialized safety equipment, including respirators and protective Tyvek suits. The tri-bladed grinder and HEPA vacuum system were critical in safely removing old paint without spreading debris. As the siding was stripped, a few boards required replacement, yet overall, the wood was impressively well-preserved for its age, facilitating a successful restoration.

Project Outcome

Upon completion, this Ballard craftsman home was restored with a pristine finish, reflective of the craftsmanship and attention to detail it deserves. The thorough stripping and painting process renewed the home’s original beauty, enhancing its curb appeal and preserving its structure for years to come.
