How to Style and Paint Shelves
Posted on July 27, 2020
Shelves are great for both storage and style purposes. It’s like a win-win. Decorating your shelves can seem overwhelming because you want them to look perfect. You may find yourself spending hours rearranging things or deciding which items are actually shelf-worthy. Decorating your shelves shouldn’t be stressful… it can actually be quite fun. Also, it’s important to remember that what you chose to showcase doesn’t have to be permanent. If you decide you don’t like it or you just get bored of it, you can easily swap it out for new things. Here are some of our favorite ways to style up a shelf.
The first step is to narrow down the items that you are going to put on the shelf. Pick pieces that will work well together and are aesthetically pleasing enough to be on display. You don’t want the shelf to look cluttered so make sure that you are being selective.
Narrow down further by choosing a color palette. Now that you know the items you are working with, organize them by color. Play around with which items’ colors work well together. Place aside those items or patterns that will clash with the overall style and color scheme you are going for.
Once you have narrowed down your items, start visualizing where you want each piece to go. This step may take some time until you are finally happy with the result. This step involves a lot of trial and error.
Create a proper balance. You don’t want to overcrowd your shelves, but you don’t want them to be too empty either. Place larger pieces by themselves and group smaller ones together.
The last step is to style it. This is the fun part. Now that all of the visual aspects are squared away you can let loose and create a beautiful look. It is a fun challenge to make different items blend well together.
