Why You Should Hire a Professional for Wood Staining
Posted on December 9, 2019
Are you considering staining your deck or another area of your home? If so, you’re likely thinking you can just do it yourself, right? Wrong.
There’s a lot that goes into staining that most people do not realize. You can’t just apply stain and it will look good. Instead, you have to prepare the wood to receive the stain.
How to Prepare the Wood for Stain
The most important part of staining is ensuring the wood is completely dry. This means if you’re staining outside, you probably have to wait until it hasn’t rained for a few days. Humidity can come into play too, so be sure the wood isn’t damp from humidity or even morning due.
When dry, it’s good to sand all of the wood to remove old stain and remove splinters. You may find some areas that need replacing or repairing. You can take care of that part at this stage.
Once the wood is completely sanded, you can start to apply the stain. Be sure the stain goes on evenly, or you’ll end up with places that are darker or lighter in some areas. You want a smooth, even look to the newly stained wood, so take your time.

This picture was taken while helping a customer with the staining of the exterior of her home. She had stucco exterior but with wood above her windows. We painted the stucco first, and then we stained the wood. This shows you the difference between the newly stained wood and the old wood. What a difference!
