Epoxy Garage Floor Coverings 101
Posted on August 26, 2021
Your dingy, dirty concrete garage floor can be transformed into a beautiful showroom for your vehicles. Yes, it is true. You can increase the usable square footage of your house, increase your resell value and have your neighbors green with envy because your garage floor looks like the Corvette showroom in Bowling Green, Kentucky.
What is Epoxy Floor Covering?
Epoxy coating is an epoxy resin combined with a polyamine hardener. The two ingredients must be mixed together prior to being applied. Once they’re combined, you have only a certain amount of time to apply the coating. This two-part system changes the physical properties of your floor and strengthens its surface.
Epoxy is smooth, can be slip resistant, and is able to withstand substantial weight, making it a top choice for garages where motorized equipment is used. Because it is seamless, it is often preferred to tile, which houses dirt and bacteria in the grout-filled seams that need to be regularly cleaned.
Although epoxies are usually rolled on to a surface, like paint would be applied, do not assume epoxy is the same as regular enamel or latex paint. After they harden, epoxy coatings chemically bond with the floor and form a thick, protective layer. In addition to melding with the base layer, the coating creates a durable surface that shrugs off scratches, oils, traffic wear, and hot-tire pickup.
How Long Does Epoxy Flooring Last? Can it be Removed?
Although Epoxy is very durable and long-lasting, all flooring must be replaced at some point. Most Epoxy will last over a decade or longer, but eventually, it will become worn and require replacement.
The epoxy removal process is easy and can be done by a professional or on your own. You’ll need a stripping solution that matches the form of epoxy floor you have (water-based or solvent-based), a mop, a metal scraper, gloves, eye protection, and a face mask. The entire process can be finished in a day or two.
What Type of Flooring Can Epoxy Be Applied To?
Most garage floors are concrete but with specialized preparation and coatings, epoxy can be applied over:
Concrete.
Granite.
Marble.
Ceramic.
Porcelain.
Tile.
Plywood.
MDF/MDX
So, if you have been unsatisfied with the look of your garage floor and are looking for options to spruce things up, epoxy may be just the solution. It will keep your garage looking like a showroom for years to come.
