The project was meticulously scheduled between April 4th and April 28th to align with optimal weather conditions, the availability of complementary contractors (sandblasters and electricians), and a crucial pool inspection deadline. The entire process spanned 478 labor hours, with the duration extended slightly due to the lead time required for ordering specialty materials.
Pre-Project Conditions:
At the start of the project, the slide showed clear signs of neglect. Paint was failing, and despite an initial sandblast, heavy surface rust had developed due to delays in coating application. The corrosion was so extensive that in some areas, planks had to be removed and reinstalled to reach and treat the affected metal. The existing coating was worn down to a previous layer, and several cracks in the structure called for careful patchwork.
Scope of Work:
Our team was tasked with restoring the slide using a three-part coating system approved by the project architect. The scope included:
Surface Preparation: Pre-washing with a wax remover, sanding with crosshatch techniques, and a thorough acetone wipe-down to ensure adhesion.
Priming: Application of a zinc-based primer formulated specifically for metal protection—heavy-duty and engineered for longevity.
Painting and Finishing: A one-coat color system followed by a clear coat polish, per budgetary constraints. The coatings were specified by an engineer to suit heavy steel structures.
Special Challenges:
This project presented several unique challenges in the areas of accessibility, timing sensitivity, and logistics. Certain sections of the slide required scaffolding due to height and terrain, with natural barriers ruling out the use of ladders or lifts. All prepared surfaces had to be painted the same day to avoid flash rusting. Additionally, the topcoat needed to be applied within three days of the primer. Products had to be special ordered with no room for error. The two-part coatings had a short working window, making precision in both ordering and application critical.
