Accent walls are one wall in a room with a different design than the others, whether it’s just a different shade of color or a different pattern or texture. It’s an easy and fun way to liven up your home and make the space a bit more unique.
Choose Your Wall– The first step is to choose the location of your accent wall. Your best option will be a solid wall without windows or doors. This will make sure there isn’t any competition for views and the color of the accent wall won’t be altered by the natural light coming from outside. You can also choose by focal point, like a headboard or fireplace. Or if your room doesn’t have a focal point, you can create one! Move a sofa or consider hanging a painting or family portrait on the wall.
Choose Your Accent– The next step is to choose what kind of accent wall you want. First, decide whether you want to go bold or subtle. In rooms with neutral walls, you can go bold and add a pop of color with your accent wall. If you have a larger room choosing a deeper or lighter version of the color already on the wall tends to look best.
When painting the accent wall in a darker shade than the color already on the walls, a one to two tone difference is best. It will contrast the lighter walls and make sure your eyes get drawn to the focal point of the room. If you are doing a pop of color, still choose one to two shades darker than your already painted color.
An accent wall can mean more than just contrasting paint. Other popular options include subtle wallpaper with natural coloring such as grasscloth, applied wood paneling, and reclaimed wood boards. Rather than focusing on color, these surfaces can break up the look of sheetrock and offer some variety.
