Gutters

Gutters are meant to whisk water away from walls and foundations where it can pool and fester. Likely, over the winter the gutters have been clogged up with debris. Clean out sticks and leaves to allow the gutters to do their job. Water will cause damage against paint, walls and foundations. The best way to avoid costly repairs is to repair gutters and downspouts now. To test them, spray the hose on the roof and watch where the water runs.

Roof

Your roof has a big job to do. After protecting your home from winter weather all season, the roof could be in need of some attention. If you are comfortable on a ladder, climb up and have a look at your roof. Signs of damage or potential damage include cracking shingles, loose tiles or warping. Make sure seals against the chimney, vents or skylights are still air tight and flexible. Over time, the moisture in the seal is leached away. They get brittle and break, allowing leaks to form.

Windows and Doors

The caulking around windows and doors is similar to the seals on your roof. Overtime, they caulk gets more brittle and can crack and fall away. This leaves your interior and exterior exposed to the elements and can allow for leaks. The result is a costly and messy repair. Head off issues before they begin by completing a thorough inspection and repairs if necessary.

Paint

While most homeowners consider paint purely aesthetic, it is actually the first line of defense for your home against the outside elements. The protective film it creates keeps out moisture, pests and heat. Failing paint can mean other more expensive problems are just around the corner.  The first sign paint is in need of attention is chalking. Run your hand over the exterior paint, if a residue is on your hand, it’s time to call in some help. Beyond this, look for cracking, peeling, bubbling or discoloration.
