How Can You Prepare your Exterior Paint for Winter?

Posted on September 13, 2019

Why are we drowning your fall fun with talk of winter? Now that Labor Day is behind us, it’s time to consider what’s going to happen to your home with the weather this winter. While we aren’t wishing away the end of good weather, it’s the perfect time to get your house ready for the harsh conditions. How can you prepare your exterior paint for winter?

Inspect

Now is the time to go over your house and look for any paint that is showing signs of decay or weakening. You’ll want to catch and repair any imperfections in paint and structure before the wet and cold sets in for winter. If moisture can get under your paint film, you could be looking at significantly more damage by next spring.

Clean

The summer season has no doubt added some mold and mildew to your deck and outdoor areas. It’s a good idea to power wash the exterior of your home to remove the contaminants and leave it pristine heading into fall.

Landscaping

Any bushes and branches against your home can allow for wood rot to set it. Take an afternoon and trim up shrubbery and bushes to keep a safe distance from your house’s structure. This will help reduce pests from sneaking in as well.

Caulking

Sealing cracks is imperative before the cooler weather rolls in. Not only will it keep the moisture out of your home, it will seal out those chilly breezes. Each crack, no matter the size, has the potential to decrease the efficiency of your home. By correcting cracks, you’ll keep the warm in and the cold out.

Clearing

Ice, sleet and snow will melt eventually, and need somewhere to drain to. Clear drainage ways to give the water a place to go.You don’t want it puddling against your house with potential to grow into mold and mildew or worse – wood rot! Keep the water flowing and the debris down stream with cleared drains.
