Commercial Painting Project In Portland – Oregon Humane Society Building

CertaPro Painters of Portland recently completed a commercial painting project for the Oregon Humane Society. We applied epoxy coating to the dog kennel walls, floors, and central staff walkway in 2 of the 4 dog pods in Oregon Humane Society’s main 66,000 SF building in Portland. This project demanded careful planning and preparation. Working closely with our Sherwin Williams representative, we identified the existing coating and assessed the cleaning materials used on-site. With this information, Sherwin Williams developed precise product specifications suited to our needs.

Given the building’s high foot traffic from both humans and dogs, as well as the daily cleaning routine, our main focus was both the safety and comfort of the animals and people in the building and the durability of the coating. After Sherwin Williams’ recommendation, we collaborated with the Oregon Humane Society to conduct an adhesion test. This ensured that the new coating would properly adhere to the existing one. Following a successful test, we proceeded with light abrasion of the existing coating, followed by primer and topcoat application. We also paid special attention to chipped and flaking areas, ensuring a smooth finish without compromising the underlying coating.

Description of Project: CertaPro Painters of Portland recently completed a commercial painting project for the Oregon Human Society. We applied epoxy coating to the dog kennel walls, floors, and central staff walkway in 2 of the 4 dog pods in Oregon Humane Society’s main 66,000 SF building in Portland.

Project Condition: The Oregon Humane Society reached out to us initially in September 2020 due to concerns about the condition of the epoxy coating on their dog kennels. Given the heavy usage by shelter dogs and daily pressure washing with industrial-grade cleaners, the existing coating displayed noticeable wear and tear. Scratches, flakes, and chips were evident in various areas, likely attributed to the age and rigorous cleaning routine.

Project Involvement:We successfully applied a resilient epoxy coating to the walls, floors, and central staff walkway within two of the four dog pods situated in the main 66,000 square foot building of the Oregon Humane Society in Portland.

Special Challenges: Working within an active and occupied shelter like the Oregon Humane Society required extensive coordination and preparation with both their staff and our partners. Our first challenge was to create a window of opportunity for the project by encouraging adoptions, ensuring one of the four kennel pods could remain empty for approximately six weeks. This allowed us two weeks for preparation and application of the coating products, followed by four weeks for curing, ensuring no discomfort for the animals.

The specified coating system, Macropoxy 646 and High Solids Polyurethane, emitted strong odors throughout the application and curing process. To mitigate this, our team collaborated closely with the Oregon Humane Society’s facilities staff and building engineer. We strategically shut off the HVAC system in the work area, masked the dropped ceiling and vents to contain odors, and removed an exterior window to facilitate ventilation and fresh air intake.

Additionally, we deployed four 2,000 CFM air scrubbers within the workspace and equipped our crew with respirators to ensure they had a constant supply of fresh air. Throughout the project, our project manager remained onsite to monitor air quality, ensuring the safety and comfort of both the animals and staff in the rest of the building.
