Color Options for Painting Cabinets

Posted on November 25, 2019

Replacing kitchen cabinets is a messy and costly proposition. Instead of replacing, try renovating. Painting kitchen cabinets gives you the feel of a new kitchen without the cost. Here are color options for painting cabinets to get you started.

As a major design element of your kitchen, the cabinets could be holding your style back. Change them with paint rather than having new cabinets put in. Add in new hardware and your whole kitchen will feel brand new.

Cabinet color choices can be tricky, but not impossible. Work with colors that will remain in the room, like the counters, back splash and appliances. If these items are more muted, go bold with your cabinet choice. If they are a stylish element on their own, consider a neutral color.

Neutral colors

If you gather colors across your counter top appliances and back splash, work within a neutral pallet to choose your cabinet color. This will give your colorful items a chance to stand out against the subdued backdrop. White cabinets brighten a room and give you a blank color scheme to work with. However, if you’re concerned about messes, consider a gray or beige option.

Vibrant colors

If your kitchen is mostly made up of neutral colors, go wild with the cabinet color. Yellow can bring some warm whimsy into the room. Deep butter or barely sunny give a happy feeling to the room and allow you to bring a smile to faces. If you are wanting relaxed, try blue. Mint green or teal have also seen recent spikes in usage on cabinets.

Dark colors

Make a posh statement in your kitchen with a deep, rich color. Instead of bland, try a jewel tone like sapphire, emerald or ruby. These colors can overtake a kitchen and sort of make the cabinets seem to be encroaching. To avoid a shrinking room, pair the color with white walls and appliances. Add some lighter accents for additional perceived space.

Be creative

Most kitchens tend to be a monotone color scheme. Don’t feel obligated to go with one color for everything. Ombre cabinets have taken on a huge following. Use a lighter version of the color on top cabinets, and darker on the bottom. This gives your kitchen a faux vaulted feeling as the eye is drawn upwards, plus you’ll have a trendy kitchen you can work with.
