Beat the Chill: Paint the Interior of your Home in Winter

Posted on November 20, 2019

Now that winter is here, your time is mostly relegated to the indoors. If you are going to stare at the same 4 walls all winter, why not give them a fresh color? This season has many benefits for interior paint jobs. Here’s how to beat the chill. Paint the interior of your home in winter.

Most homeowners will not even consider a paint job during the winter. Traditionally all painting takes place during the spring and summer months. But when it comes to interior painting, winter is actually the perfect season to take on a job.

Heat and Humidity

While summer is optimal for painting exteriors, winter can provide the right temperatures for interior painting. Too much heat can cause issues like peeling, chipping and discoloration. By painting in the cooler months, this can be avoided.

Painting the interior of your home during winter is easily done. Ambient temperatures need to be above 50 degrees Fahrenheit, which your home is likely warmed to. While you are painting, turn off the heater to reduce fumes blowing around the house. Most pros recommend opening a window to allow the cool breezes to blow fumes out of the room. Once you’ve sealed the paint cans, turn the heat back on.

You’re also going to experience lower humidity in the air. This means the dryness will help the paint cure faster and dry quicker. The humidity should be between 40 and 50% for best results.

Banish Boredom

Limited activities and early darkness tend to make people hide in their homes. Staying inside can cause you to go stir crazy. Stay busy by taking on a painting project. You’ll get the added benefit of a new color to look at for the remainder of the season. New and vivid colors will uplift your mood and get your moving. Break up the dreary white and gray outside with something new inside.

Serious Savings

Savings abound in the off-season for painting. You’ll notice home improvement stores are giving discounts to encourage sales of supplies you’ll need for your project. Take advantage of the savings and get your paint and tools for less.

If you choose to work with a painting company, you’ll notice that they are also giving additional services or discounted rates to entice you to book. They have to keep their crews busy during the off season too! You could get a professional painted project for a lower cost by painting in the off season.
