Frequently Asked Questions about Residential Exterior Painting
Posted on May 2, 2022
Here are some of the most frequently asked questions from homeowners about residential exterior painting.
How often do I paint my home’s exterior? Is it okay to “go cheap” on paint?
The upkeep of your home’s exterior really should be a nonnegotiable task. All homeowners should prepare and budget for this expense. For most people, a home is the biggest investment they will make in their lifetime. It only makes sense to be thorough and diligent about its care and maintenance.
The deterioration of exterior paint is not quite that exact or general. Each surface will need to be prepared, and the paint should be applied, according to its condition and many other factors. Your CertaPro Painters will assess and explain what type of coating your exterior requires at your estimate.
Exterior paint is essentially your home’s protection from all the outside weather elements and creepy-crawly insects that want inside your house. So it’s vital to select paint that not only looks fantastic, has a superb finish, and is of a certain quality so your home is safe from all outdoors.
CertaPro only works with the best quality paint coatings that do all of the above. If we paint your home, you can rest assured that everything outside is staying outside where it’s supposed to be.
Our paint coatings are durable, practical and formulated to withstand the test of time, like harsh weather conditions in winter and the baking UV light of mid-summer.
All of the above factors could be a great argument for never “going cheap” with exterior coatings.

Can you paint a brick home’s exterior?
For brick, stone or rendered walls, a masonry paint is usually required. It is extremely durable and water-resistant. It offers an effective protection from the elements. It is highly dirt-resistant, anti-fungal and has anti-ageing properties. This ensures your painted brick exterior looks good for a long time.

What are the trending exterior home colors this year?
Darker colors are on trend right now in cooler climates. Crisp, deep colors give a feeling of warmth while also being modern and luxurious too.
If your home has lots of white trim, dark exterior paint will really make your home pop. White columns, white windows and white trim really look like icing on a cake when you pair them with a crisp deep dark paint color.
However, if you live in a part of the world where it’s warm most of the time, you need to be careful when opting for darker paint shades on the exterior of your home.
Dark colors absorb both light and heat. This will make your home feel warmer. This is a great choice if you live in a cooler climate. Or if you are actively trying to increase the insulation of your home.
However, dark colors should be avoided if you want to keep your home cool. For these houses, light colors are better for as they help to reflect light and will keep your home cool.

How many colors should my home exterior have?
Traditionally, home exteriors should have at least two colors, one for the trim and one for the body. However, it is your home. You can use whatever many colors you see fit. Your neighbors may complain, or you may get a nasty letter from your HOA.
Most experts suggest the color of the exterior, trim and the roof should harmonize so your home’s exterior flows but the colors still pop.
