Local Staining Services in Davis & Weber Counties

If you own a pergola, gazebo, fence, or trellis, you’ll know firsthand how changing weather conditions can bring about deterioration in your wooden structures. Ignoring frequent re-sealing and re-staining can convert these structures into an expensive home maintenance burden, potentially detracting from your property’s value. The more you procrastinate on hiring a professional painting contractor, the more the expenses climb.

CertaPro Painters® of Davis & Weber Counties are proud to present our skilled residential painting teams who specialize in sealing and staining wood surfaces, effectively protecting them against a range of weather elements. Depending on the necessities of your particular project, our proficient surface preparation and staining methodology could include:

Wash/Clean

It's essential to ensure your wooden structures are thoroughly cleaned before applying fresh stain. A pressure wash can effectively rid your surfaces of mold, mildew, algae, and flaking coatings. The right cleaning solution plays a significant role depending on the condition of your pergola or gazebo. To achieve the desired finish, you might need to undergo a complete stripping process, either chemically or through sanding, and perhaps even a brightening procedure.

Preparation

For a successful staining project, meticulous cleaning and preparation are indispensable. It is paramount to scrape off or wire brush any loose coating left after pressure washing. If a specific finish is desired, sanding could be a requisite step. Loose nails, screws, and boards need to be firmly fixed. Typically, caulking isn't required as the stain must have room to breathe and expel moisture.

Staining

Opting for a superior quality stain is always a commendable procedure. When dealing with vertical surfaces, make sure any raw wood is adequately primed beforehand if you choose to use paint. Stains are available in a diverse range of finishes such as transparent/translucent, semi-transparent, semi-solid, and solid (refer to "Stain Finishes" for additional information). Stains eliminate the need for a primary coat and should be applied constantly with a brush and roller. In case a sprayer is employed, be sure to execute a back-brush or back-roll for an even finish and to optimally infuse the product into the wood.

Maintenance

In the unique climate of Utah, it's vital to regularly maintain your exterior wooden structures such as fences and gazebos. To keep your wooden surfaces in top shape, a straightforward cleaning with a standard solution should be done annually at a minimum. The frequency of re-staining can vary with horizontal surfaces like floors and railings potentially needing touch-ups or a new coat every 1-4 years, given the type of stain used initially. Vertical surfaces typically last longer as they withstand less foot traffic and moisture buildup. Plan to do touch-ups and re-coating operations on alternate cycles of horizontal surface maintenance.

FAQs on Staining Projects

How often should I apply stain on my pergola, gazebo, or fence?

If you’re using a transparent stain, it is suggested to reapply every 1 to 3 years. But if you’re using a solid stain, you should consider reapplication every 2 – 5 years.

How can I decide between a solid stain, a transparent, or a semi-transparent one?

The longevity of your product’s protection is inversely related to how much pigment (color) it has. Therefore, once a solid stain or paint has been used, transparent options become unfeasible. Despite the maintenance required to keep it, many people prefer the transparent look as it shows off the wood’s natural color.

Do I have to strip my deck each time I want to stain it again?

While stripping your deck is technically recommended each time, it may not always be financially feasible for everyone. In such cases, reapplying the previously used product is a suitable second-best solution.

CertaPro did some painting for me and did a wonderful job. There was no mess to clean up. Pablo was very careful and all went smoothly. I will use them again.
