Why You Need Drywall Repair Before Painting
Posted on July 22, 2019
Many people ignore damaged drywall when they paint their walls. They may not want to deal with repairing or replacing the damaged drywall and figure it won’t look bad if they just paint over it. Unfortunately, they are wrong and often wish they had followed through with drywall repair.
Painting After Drywall Repair
If you’re thinking of painting your walls, be sure you don’t need drywall repair first. The signs you do need drywall repair or replacing are:
- Cracks – If there are cracks in the drywall, it can either be plastered over so they are not visible or the entire drywall panel should be replaced. Whether you repair or replace depends on how big the cracks are, so small ones should not be an issue to cover them.
- Dents – It happens often. When someone knocks into the wall, it can create a dent. Usually, the dents can’t be repaired, but the panels need to be replaced. This is the only way to make the paint job look flawless.
- Divets – Divets or small holes in the drywall can make the paint look bad as well. Most of the time, while they can be filled, it’s better to replace the entire panel if there many of them.
Once the drywall is repaired or replaced, painters can apply the primer or paint to the walls. Since the drywall panels are smooth and clear from cracks, divets, and dents, the paint goes down smoothly.
What to Do After It’s Been Painted
If you’re already painted the walls with the drywall needing to be repaired/replaced, you have two choices:
- Repair the drywall now and then repaint the area. You do not have to repaint the entire wall. Simply replace the panel or repair the damaged panel, and then you can repaint just the panel.
- You can simply deal with the damage. If the damage doesn’t bother you, it’s possible to just leave it. It’s not exactly what most people prefer, though.
