How often do interior walls need to be painted?
Posted on December 2, 2020
Painting the interior of your home may seem like an overwhelming project that will disrupt the home for an extended period of time. While doing an entire home interior your self would take some time, a professional crew can make quick work of interior painting projects. Many home owners put off painting projects, we often get asked by customers after a project – how long will this paint last? How often should this kind of project be done on a home?
The answer really depends and can vary. Some areas of the home get used more than others, throughways tend to take the most damage over the y ears from moving things in and out and scuffing the walls. Paint projects will last up to 15 years in most cases, however sometimes a more frequent painting schedule is needed especially in high traffic or commercial buildings.
How Often Should You Repaint Your Walls?
More than anything, this is a matter of wear and tear. When you need to repaint your walls will largely be dependent on how often those areas are used. Even more so, at times, on how exposed these areas can be to external damage.
Shared Spaces
Rooms like kitchens and living rooms can be the setting for a lot of activity and the walls often show it. Kitchens take a beating: spilled drinks, messes from new recipes, and sticky fingerprints you keep finding everywhere. Living rooms are similarly the sites that endure a lot of commotion, and you’re just as likely to find dents, dings, and stains. If these rooms are maintained with high quality paint, they only require a new coat of paint every 5 to 7 years.
Bedrooms
Our bedrooms tend to be some of the spaces we spend a lot of our time in. The walls of our bedrooms are also the last sight we see when we close our eyes, and the first when we wake up, so its appearance can greatly affect your mood. There are exceptions to the rule, but usually, children’s bedrooms will start to show signs of disrepair sooner than adult bedrooms. Between dents from toys, spills, markers, and anything else kids can get their hands on, the walls of their rooms are bound to see some tumult. Children’s rooms should be repainted every 2-3 years with durable paint that can undergo heavy scrubbing. Adult bedrooms, in most cases, do well with a new coat every 5 to 7 years.
Other High Priority Areas
For the most part, you’ll be able to tell how often you should repaint your walls with visible signs of deterioration. But sometimes one of the most dangerous threats to our home can remain unseen. Lingering moisture in bathrooms and laundry rooms can seep into crevices or be trapped under the layers of paint as a result of improper drying. Whatever the case may be, this moisture can eventually cause irreparable damage to the foundation and appearance of your home. These areas that are susceptible to moisture buildup should be repainted every 2 to 3 years, while also assessing any possible areas of concern that may create problems down the road.
