Updating a 150-Year Old Home Interior
In March 2026, CertaPro Painters® of North York, ON completed a full interior repaint and restoration-style refinishing project for a beautiful 150+ year-old Victorian home in Innisfil, Ontario. While the homeowner initially wanted to refresh the interior with updated wall colours, a detailed inspection revealed widespread deterioration in the original caulking, trim joints, cabinetry, and crown mouldings throughout the home. Decorative woodwork and cabinetry were particularly affected, with gaps and movement visible in numerous transition areas.
The project evolved into a comprehensive restoration-focused repaint that combined modern colour updates with careful preservation of the home’s original Victorian craftsmanship. Extensive preparation, crack repair, sanding, caulking, and surface refinishing were completed to restore the visual integrity of the historic interior while maintaining its original character.
SCOPE OF THE WORK:
The project included a complete interior repaint across multiple areas of the home, along with extensive preparation and restoration work throughout the trims, mouldings, cabinetry, and decorative features. Special care was taken to preserve the original Victorian detailing while introducing updated colours and cleaner finishes for a refreshed appearance.
CHALLENGES & SOLUTIONS:
One of the primary challenges was working within a historic Victorian home where decades of natural settling had caused extensive movement in original trim and millwork components. Fine-detail sanding, careful brushwork, and fine-finish roller application techniques were used throughout the property to preserve the crisp lines and intricate details of the original Victorian millwork.
Special protection systems were also used throughout the project to safeguard hardwood floors, furnishings, and delicate trim elements during production.
SPECIAL EQUIPMENT & TECHNIQUES:
Rather than replacing original materials, the team carefully restored existing details using precision caulking, crack stabilization, sanding, and repair techniques designed specifically for aging architectural surfaces. This approach preserved the craftsmanship and character of the original woodwork while dramatically improving the final appearance.
Paint Colours and Finishes
The project featured a carefully selected Benjamin Moore colour palette designed to brighten and modernize the interior while complementing the home’s historic character.
Trim and kitchen upper cabinetry was painted in Chantilly Lace in a pearl finish, while the laundry room and hallways used the same color in an eggshell finish.
The kitchen island cabinetry was refreshed with Hale Navy, and the bedrooms were finished in Wickham Gray.
