How Much Will It Cost To Paint My House?

Posted on January 20, 2021

Updating your house with a fresh coat of paint not only boosts curb appeal — it enhances the overall look and feel of your entire home. So how much would it cost to paint your house? The cost of painting your house depends on the size of your house, and if you are painting your home’s exterior and interior.

CertaPro Painters® of Newton breaks down everything you need to know about the costs of painting your home’s exterior and interior.

Exterior Painting:

The cost of painting your entire home’s exterior usually starts around $5,000. However, different factors can affect the price of your exterior painting project. These factors include:

  1. The size of your home. The larger your home, the more labor is involved as painters need to maneuver and work on hard to reach areas.
  2. The condition of the existing paint. Homeowners typically schedule a paint job when they notice their current paint is chipping or peeling. The current paint’s condition will determine how much labor goes into the prep work. To learn more about our process, check out our paint removal page.
  3. Changing colors. Going from a dark to light color, or vice versa, also impacts the project’s cost as a new color often requires priming and at least two coats of paint. The priming and multiple coats are necessary if you want to ensure adequate coverage for protection, durability, and appearance so that the old coat is not “bleeding” through.
  4. Details of house items. Numerous areas in the house require detailed paintwork like trim, soffits, fascia, windows, and door frames. This is especially true if there are multiple dimensions and faces, as well as color changes.
  5. Repair work. Often, rotted wood needs to be taken care of before painting a new coat. The light carpentry labor and materials will be added to the project cost.
  6. Appearance enhancements. If you want anything besides the surface of your home painted, like rain gutters/downspouts, window sashes, handrails, lighting fixtures, etc., this will come at an additional cost.

We suggest doing your exterior painting project in dry conditions during the spring, summer or fall as temperatures are typically above 40 degrees. If deleading is involved, spring and fall are the best times to paint since our painters need to be in protective suits during the removal process.

A typical exterior painting project takes about five working days to complete, weather permitting. This includes power washing the surface, masking various objects like windows and utility items, and prepping, which includes removing old paint and priming.

At CertaPro Painters® of Newton, we suggest people paint their home’s exterior every ten years if conditions are mild. However, harsh winters, storms, and other external elements like the sun, tree growth, and outdoor pests can significantly accelerate the frequency.

Interior Painting:

When creating a budget for an interior painting project, consider the room you’re going to get done. If the current paint is in good condition, you should expect to pay around $500 per room to paint the walls and ceiling. Additional factors that can affect the cost of interior painting include:

  1. The size of the room
  2. Trim for windows, doors, and baseboards
  3. Other room items, like closets, intricate molding, cabinets, and fixtures
  4. Wall preparation. Holes and dings are typical, but damage from water leakage, wallpaper removal, or texture repair are conditions that affect pricing.
  5. Changing the color. Going from one color to another can increase pricing due to the additional labor and materials.

In normal conditions, painting the inside of your home can be done every five to seven years. The timing may be shorter for rooms that experience heavy foot traffic or unforeseen events, like water damage.
