Metal Roof Painting in the Greater Green Bay Area
Metal roofs offer a long life and great protection from the elements. However, metal roofs need to be painted when signs of wear to the coatings are showing on the roof. Painting a metal roof is a difficult job, and typically takes a long time to complete. It’s a job best left for professionals, safety is a concern with this type of project. Contact a professional commercial painter unless you are willing to assume a lot of safety and integrity risks with a metal roof painting project.
Materials for Metal Roof Painting Projects
When painting metal, the surface should be thoroughly cleaned and rust spots should be removed. Old paint can be scraped away and rust may need some treatment with vinegar or rust remover. Typically sanding and or grinding to remove surface rust are necessary. Sometimes sandblasting is also recommended depending on the conditions of the roof at the start of the project. After all loose paint and rust have been removed, it’s time to power wash the surface to remove any accumulated dirt or debris that may be lingering on the roof.
Special primers are usually used for metal materials, for the paint to hold up over time, a good primer (i.e: rust inhibitor) is important. Paint rollers with long extensions or paint sprayers are typically used for roof projects.
Depending on the type of roof you may need to consider different types of paint. For the most part, roofs are painted either with acrylic-based paint or oil-based paint, contact us to take a look at your building and prepare a free estimate if you would like us to make a professional recommendation.
Metal Roof Paint Colors
There may be some rules about what colors you can use on your buildings exterior, but if not, take the colors of other exterior surfaces into account when deciding on color. The roof color should compliment exterior walls and trim around the building.
The color you select will have an affect on the surface temperature. Surface temperatures can be increased between 50 and 70 percent depending on color. This will change the lifespan of the paint on the roof.
Colors vary but common colors for metal roofs include:
- Black
- Brown
- Red
- Green
- Blue
- Silver
- White
