How to Paint Concrete and Patio Makeover Tips
Posted on April 29, 2019
The harsh winter months can wreak havoc on your concrete patio with snow, sleet and salt. Now that spring has arrived and you can see the damage, it’s probably time for a makeover. Here is how to paint concrete, and patio makeover tips for your project.
Clean
First, remove all mobile items on your patio. Having an empty work space will make the rest of the project easier. Working around furniture and fixtures will slow you down in the long run. Putting grills, seating and other items outside of the patio creates an easily workable space.
Wash
Concrete needs to be cleaned prior to work. Use a degreasing solution and either a scrub brush or power washer and remove all dirt and dust to make sure your outcome.
Dry
The concrete must be completely dried to move forward with work. If there is any water seepage or pooling, now is the time to repair it. It could take several days for the floor to dry thoroughly.
Sand
Whether there is old paint on the floor, or you are dealing with virgin concrete, you will need to sand off the top coat. This ensures a roughed up surface for paint to adhere to. Vacuum the floor and go over it with a tack cloth.
Repair
If the floor shows any signs of cracks or dings, now is the time to correct them. Mix a concrete patch compound following manufacturer’s instructions. Fill the holes or and cracks with a trowel to push into any depressions. Once it’s dried, smooth by sanding if it needs it.
Prime
With a paint roller, use a high quality primer and roll two coats on to the floor. The primer should be allowed to dry between each layer.
Paint
Using a new roller or paint compressor, apply at least two coats of epoxy paint. Make sure you allow ample dry time between coats.
Seal
With a new roller, put several coats of masonry sealer on the paint. Again, allow dry time between coats. Your floor will be sealed and beautiful for the whole summer season.
