Keep your Project on Point with our Commercial Painting Tips

Posted on January 14, 2020

Commercial painting is rarely something a business owner is on fire for. It can really open up and refresh a tired space. You should go through due diligence and research and interview several reputable and recommended contractors. Find one, agree on a price and get started. You’re done, right? Wrong.

As the space owner, you are just as responsible for the project as the paint crew. You set the tone for the timelines, scheduling, budget and scope. Being involved will create a successful working relationship throughout the project.

From our pros, here are 3 commercial painting tips to stay on target.

Plan

Taking on a project like painting while keeping your business running can be more than challenging. To keep your company flowing, you’ll need to work very closely with the contractor you choose. Ask for a detailed plan and schedule of the work. Some crews will provide overnight or weekend work to minimize the impact on production. You can also work in sections throughout the project, moving employees as you go. Most companies understand and are happy to work around your requests.

Always create a backup plan for inclement weather or other potential issues that could delay the work. Humidity, cold weather and rain can impact painting, not just outside, but inside too.

Materials

For the materials you’re working with, it’s usually best to have your contractor take the lead. That doesn’t mean you have no say, but work together to find particular brands that the contractor is comfortable with and offer the finishes and colors you’re looking for. There should be a budget for materials and a discussion of options that you are both involved in. While some paints might be more costly, take into consideration that they could potentially cut down time on-site or last for longer.

Walk Through

After the work is done, you and your crew leader should do a final walkthrough of the work area. Look at all of the completed work and make sure everything is up to standard. Typically there is a complete packet at the end of work that contains pictures, before and after, maintenance suggestions and color information.
