In October 2024, a painting project was completed on the historic Silos in West Nashville, TN, which are part of the city’s revitalized industrial area. The silos, 120 feet tall and 60 feet wide, are surrounded by a mix of restaurants, office space, apartments, condos, and event venues. Historically used to store grain in the early 1900’s, the local landmark is now home to an environmental services company.
Scope of the Project
The project focused on cleaning up The Silos and giving them a fresh, bright new appearance. At the start of the project, the silos were covered in peeling paint, with vines growing on them, requiring extensive pressure washing and scraping before applying primer and fresh paint.
Challenges and Solutions
A significant challenge arose when the team could not use a 120-foot lift on the side of the silos facing the road due to concrete thickness and the weight of the lift. After exploring alternatives, the team opted to rent a 260-foot crane with a man basket, which allowed them to access all sides of the silos efficiently and without damaging the structure. This solution proved to be both time-efficient and cost-effective, staying within the property manager’s budget. After completing three sides, they finished the final side with a 120-foot boom lift. Despite some rain delays, the project was completed in three weeks.
