In October 2025, CertaPro Painters® of Nashville and Middle Tennessee completed a full exterior deck and porch restoration project for a residential home in Thompson Station, TN. The project focused on replacing an aging second-story deck, restoring damaged wood surfaces, and improving long-term durability and pest protection throughout the outdoor living area.
Before work began, the home’s existing deck showed significant weathering and deterioration. The older deck boards were due for replacement after years of exposure to the elements.
The tongue-and-groove wood porch ceiling had also sustained damage from woodpeckers, leaving visible holes and surface imperfections that required patching and refinishing. Overall, the outdoor space needed both structural updates and cosmetic restoration.
The homeowners wanted a low-maintenance decking solution along with repairs and refinishing that would refresh the space while helping protect it from future wear and insect intrusion.
SCOPE OF THE WORK:
The project involved removing the original deck boards and installing new Trex composite decking to provide a durable, low-maintenance surface built for long-term performance.
To further improve the space, screening was installed beneath the deck to help prevent insects and pests from entering the area below. The project also included staining and sealing the tongue-and-groove porch ceiling and exterior railings to restore the natural wood appearance while adding protection against moisture and weather exposure.
CHALLENGES & SOLUTIONS:
One of the primary challenges was the deck’s second-story height, which required additional planning and safety measures during both demolition and installation.
Another challenge involved sealing the transition points where the under-deck screening met the home’s brick exterior. Careful sealing and detailing were required to create a secure barrier that would effectively help keep pests out while maintaining a clean finished appearance.
