Refresh Your Home with 8 Outdoor Paint Projects

Posted on April 30, 2020

Most of us are eager to escape being cramped up indoors and spend some time in the fresh air. Winter probably left your outdoor living areas in need of the same pick me up. Grab a gallon of paint and add some color to your patio or porch. Check out how to refresh your home with 8 outdoor painting projects.

Paint the Patio

For those of us with concrete tiles in our backyards, we often leave them unfinished. They are a forgotten element of the back yard. Decorate your flooring to make the perfect area to host evenings under the stars. Get latex porch and floor paint in varying shades to paint some (or all) of the squares in fun colors. Add a concrete sealer over the paint to protect it for seasons to come.

Decorated Doormat

Get a basic, plain doormat and decorate it in your style. Use some oil-based paint pens in coordinating colors to your home’s color scheme to add flowers, geometric shapes or a message welcoming guests. They will be so impressed you were able to match your mat to your house. They don’t have to know you created it yourself.

Touch up Trim

Trim often has a way of getting grimey before any other parts of your home. Because it typically involves sharp angles and corners, dirt, cobwebs and other less desirable items end up wedged into these areas. Use a brush to dust away the debris and give it a quick spray from the garden hose. After, follow it up with a quick swipe of the paintbrush and some trim paint. You’ll be surprised how much of a difference this makes in the overall look of your home.

Freshen Furniture

Outdoor furniture gets weathered quickly. Either take your current patio set or gather some pieces from garage sales and thrift stores that have good bones. Clean up the set and use a weather resistant spray paint to create a fresh and unified piece regardless of whether they came together. Don’t feel relegated to typical black or white. This is the time to let your color shine. Think purple, teal or bright blue.

Shine up Shutters

As with the trim, shutters are full of crevices for dirt and dust. Wooden and vinyl shutters can both benefit from a thorough cleaning and a coat of paint. Be sure to pick paints that are appropriate for the shutters. Wooden shutters can be stained or painted with a wood-appropriate paint. Vinyl shutters are a bit more difficult to cover, but try a product like Krylon Fusion which adheres to plastics well.

Stylized your Steps

Since the front entrance to your home is the first interaction people have with it, make it pop. Front stairs usually are due in spring for a good cleaning. Check them over and repair any cracks and uneven surfaces. Add some color to them. Choose to match your steps to the rest of the house or get creative with paint. Add one color on the tops of the steps and another on the risers or opt for ombre on the way up. It’s your choice!

Make a Gorgeous Garden

Add to your freshly planted garden with a colorful arbor or trellis. While adding color and style, this will also give climbing and flowering plants an area to cling to.

Must have Mailbox

Sure, you might need a mailbox to get your deliveries but that doesn’t mean it has to be standardized. If you have a driveway or wall mounted mailbox, add a new color to it that is a shade derived from your house. Go bold with house numbers so visitors can find your house. Use coordinating colors with bold accents to make a true statement.
