Pleasant Valley Day School Interior Restoration

Pleasant Valley Day School contacted CertaPro Painters of Central Arkansas to complete an interior renovation project. This school for infants and toddlers stretches across 6,800 square feet inside the Pleasant Valley Church of Christ in Little Rock, AR. Pleasant Valley’s interior had gone seven to ten years without receiving any substantial attention in regards to painting. CertaPro’s professionals were well-equipped to transform the interior and bring it back to life.

INTIAL CONDITIONS:

The daycare had not been repainted in 7-10 years. The walls and wainscot showed signs of wear, while the cabinets had extensive peeling paint and grime buildup. Each of the five rooms contained large murals that needed removal before painting. Additionally, several electrical outlet holes were left behind due to the relocation or removal of wiring. The existing paint was a dark beige, creating a dated and dull atmosphere. Starting from these conditions, it took Two Weeks to finish the project.

CHALLENGES:

  • Mural Removal: The murals in each room required sanding and skim coating to ensure a smooth, paintable surface.
  • Surface Preparation: Years of accumulated dirt, grime, and peeling paint required deep cleaning and proper surface repairs before painting could begin.
  • Outlet Patching: About 10 outlet-sized holes needed patching due to electrical modifications.
  • Dust Control: HEPA vacuums were necessary to manage dust from sanding, ensuring a clean and safe environment.

PROJECT INVOLVEMENT:

Preparation

  • Cleaned all surfaces, including walls, cabinetry, and wainscot.
  • Sanded and repaired (skim coated) peeling paint on cabinets and walls
  • Patched and repaired holes from electrical modifications.
  • Used a Festool HEPA vacuum system to minimize dust.

Painting Process

  • Applied Sherwin-Williams Pre-Catalyzed Epoxy (Semi-Gloss) on all surfaces, including walls, cabinets, door frames, and wainscot. The color selected was a very light gray, almost white, to brighten the space and create a more modern feel.
  • Multiple coats were applied to ensure durability, considering the high-traffic environment of a daycare where frequent cleaning is necessary.
