Exterior Home Improvements You Can Complete During the Winter

Posted on January 20, 2022

Our team at CertaPro Painters® of Kirkwood talks to many homeowners who ask us what they can be doing to help prep their home during the winter so it’s ready to be painted in the spring. During the cold dreary winter months, we tend to focus on the interior of our home rather than the exterior because let’s face it, no one wants to spend any more time outside than we have to. However, there are exterior home improvements you should be doing during the winter. Our team put together a list of the most important home improvement projects you can complete.

  1. Clean your gutters. If your gutters are clogged with debris, melted ice or snow won’t be able to run to the downspouts. This will lead to icicles and ice dams.
  2. Deal any cracks, tiny holes, or gaps around your home. Look around and seal any openings with caulk or sealant. This will prevent warm air from escaping. As well as help minimize the amount of repairs that will have to be done on your home in the spring when you are ready to paint.
  3. Repair your driveway and sidewalks. This one should be done in the beginning of winter so it’s one to keep in mind for next year. Winter weather will make any damage on your driveway or sidewalks worse and create potential safety hazards.
  4. Landscaping. You can do some yardwork during the winter months. Such as adding compost to the soil so it will be ready come the warmer weather.
  5. Remove snow from windows. While shoveling, remove any snow that accumulated on windowsills to prevent it from leaking into your home and causing damage.
  6. Tend to the trees. Remove any dead branches that could potentially fall from the weight of the ice and snow. If they are too heavy for you, call the professionals to come remove them.
  7. Touch up the paint. If you feel the paint on your house is in really bad condition and you don’t want to wait until spring… you can do small touch ups as long as its above 35 degrees and there is a dry stretch in the forecast.

Once the spring is here your home will be ready for a fresh coat of paint! If you are looking to complete an exterior paint project this spring, contact us for a free, no obligation estimate. We look forward to talking to you soon!
