Why We Love Painting: Beaufort and Its Homes

Posted on October 15, 2020

Established in 1711, Beaufort is the second oldest city in South Carolina next to Charleston. The large, free-standing antebellum homes are predominantly wood frame and are a medley of any or all of the following architectural styles: Georgian, Colonial, Greek Revival, and semi-tropical Spanish; known as Beaufort style. They are designed to capture the southwesterly breezes to attempt to keep cool in the oppressively humid summers of the Lowcountry.

Historic Beaufort

Although there are exceptions to the rule, the color palette of Beaufort homes can best be described as muted pastels, which create the continued impression of breeziness and coolness, or just plain white. And, don’t forget the various shades of “haint blue” on the porch ceilings! It is important to note that all color choices, when painting a home in Historic Beaufort, must first be approved by the City of Beaufort.

The Habersham Neighborhood

Beaufort style homes are so captivating that their architecture is copied in newer homes in and around the Beaufort area. One of the largest examples of Beaufort style reproductions can be found in the neighborhood of Habersham.

These homes, although charming, are high maintenance due to the intense sun, which causes fading of paint; high humidity, which can cause paint peeling and wood rot; and the corrosiveness of the salt air. Fortunately, today’s paint products are better made to withstand these elements, but regular repainting is still required.
