How to Choose the Right Paint Color the First Time

Posted on May 28, 2019

You have invested time and energy into getting your home painted. But what if you hate the color or outcome? Here’s how to get paint color choice right the first time.

Finding the Perfect Paint Color Is Hard

Choosing a color seems simple. Pick something you like. But in reality, there is a lot that goes into the decision. Color choice is directly dependent on the natural light in the room, what’s outside the window, the items in the room and more.

A perfectly chosen beige can turn green compliments of trees outside. Or go horribly red with a burgundy couch in the room. Making your choice should be done with some forethought into the process.

The professionals recommend getting several poster boards and painting each with the potential color. It gives you a big patch of color to look at for testing. Move the poster around the room different times of day to check the color and lighting. Put it against furniture that will be in the room.

Get It Right the First Time

Start with research. Go online, read reviews and see what colors are classic and trending that appeal to you. Remember to keep in mind that a color will look different with your furniture and accessories. A magazine photo shoot will look different with their items coordinated to the color scheme.

Once you have narrowed your options down, it’s time to gather paint chips at the store. If there are a couple you are leaning toward, now is a good time to get samples to paint your poster boards. Make sure to look at them during different lights of the day and against different walls. Pro decorators suggest labelling the back of the boards so you don’t get confused when it’s time to buy.

Finally, don’t overthink it. If you are waffling between two similar shades of a color, chances are you are on the right track. Make a decision and go with the color that you choose. The difference of a couple of degrees of color will not make or break your decision.
