Tilt-up Facility on Radar Road

Our team was asked to freshen up the exterior of tilt-up office buildings on Radar Road next to the Piedmont Triad International Airport. Tilt-up is a type of construction where concrete is cured in a horizontal position then “tilted” into a vertical position.

The problem to be solved:
In December 2020 our team was hired to repaint the exterior of a group of four tilt-up industrial buildings including a working logistics operation. The client also expressed a desire for a new color scheme, so we had to be prepared to paint all the exterior walls and entrances, all while ensuring that we didn’t interfere with the day-to-day operations of the facilities. Working around weather windows was another challenge.

Problem solver solution:
We started by power washing all of the buildings using a bleach solution. This removes dirt and creates a good surface for adhesion. Next, we spot primed areas where needed. We also repaired expansion joints (cut out and replaced failing caulk, adding backer rods where appropriate) and conducted minor repair to entry ceilings. Another challenge was that one of the buildings had power lines very close to the back and multiple connection points which created a safety hazard. We requested the power company to add special insulating blankets to ensure our painters were protected while doing their work. Additionally, we worked with the client to test several shades until finalizing the current colors. This will be the owner’s new signature color scheme. We painted the walls a light gray with darker gray strips and accents.

Final result:
After just under a month of work, the results were clean, fresh, and modern. We officially finished in January 2021 and received positive comments from the owner as well as owners of other nearby buildings.
