End of Summer Home Exterior Checklist: Is Your Paint Ready for a South Jersey Fall?
As summer starts to fade here in Gloucester and Salem Counties, it’s the perfect time to step outside and give your home’s exterior a closer look. After months of harsh sun, heat, humidity, and sudden storms, your paint may have taken more of a beating than you think. With fall bringing wetter weather around the corner and winter not far behind, now is the ideal moment to make sure your home is sealed, protected, and looking its best.
Here’s your end-of-summer home exterior paint checklist, brought to you by your neighbors at CertaPro Painters® of Gloucester and Salem Counties to determine if it’s time for a refresh or even a full repaint before fall sets in.
1. Inspect for Peeling, Cracking, or Bubbling Paint
South Jersey summers can be tough on exterior paint. If you notice areas where paint is peeling, bubbling, or cracking then these are clear signs that your paint is failing. If you see these issues on siding, trim, or fascia boards don’t wait and address them now before fall rains make it worse because water could start seeping in, leading to wood rot or even structural damage.
2. Check for Faded or Sun-Damaged Areas
Homes facing south and west often take the brunt of our blazing summer sun. Faded or chalky paint doesn’t just dull your curb appeal, it also signals that your paint is no longer providing the protection your home needs.
3. Examine Caulking Around Windows and Doors
Caulking helps seal your home against drafts and moisture. As temperatures fluctuate, caulk can crack or shrink. Inspect it closely, and if it’s dried out or pulling away, it’s a great time to re-caulk and consider touching up paint in those areas.
4. Look for Mold, Mildew, or Algae Growth
In Gloucester and Salem Counties, shady areas and high humidity can make mold, mildew, or algae a common sight especially on north-facing sides, eaves, gutters, or siding near shrubs. A proper cleaning may help, but recurring growth often means your paint is losing its protective edge. Consider repainting with a mildew-resistant finish.
5. Check Your Deck, Porch, and Railings
These high-traffic areas take a lot of wear and tear. Inspect for chipped or worn stain, loose boards, or exposed wood. Re-staining or repainting now can protect them from heavy moisture and freezing temperatures in the months ahead.
6. Evaluate Your Home’s Overall Appearance
Even if there’s no obvious damage, a tired or outdated paint color can drag down your home’s whole appearance. If it’s been 5–10 years since your last paint job, it might be time for a refresh. A new coat not only enhances curb appeal but also reinforces your home’s defenses for the seasons ahead.
