3 Tips for Painting a Guest Bedroom

Posted on December 20, 2021

You’ve found yourself needing to paint a guest bedroom, yet you have no idea how to start. Sound familiar? Don’t worry, you are not alone. Painting a guest bedroom can be a simple, do-it-yourself project. Today, we will touch on three common approaches to painting a guest bedroom, and a couple of tips to help do it.

What Type of Paint Do I Use?

A guest bedroom is often painted in subtle tones. Generally speaking, guest rooms are used sporadically, so often these rooms are not designed to stand out. This creates a blank canvas and often allows the paint to take a backseat to the design elements of the room, like photos. However, it is important to prepare the walls for new paint, by repairing any dings or scuffs and applying a primer/sealer. Priming and sealing the walls is important to make sure the original color does not bleed through and requires more paint.

You Can Change Your Mind

Guest room paint doesn’t have to be basic. Some homeowners like to display family heirlooms and photos in guest rooms as a way of letting the guest know they are welcome. As such, those homeowners with an artistic flair will often create a themed room. For example, if your grandfather was in the Navy, you might display his photos on a wall painted navy blue. If your favorite uncle loved the beach, you might display family photos against a wall painted with sanded paint. The possibilities are only limited to your imagination.

Paint Light Colors First

A very common scheme in a guest bedroom often involves applying more than one color. If you plan on a two-tone paint scheme, it is a good idea to paint the lighter one first. That way if there is over paint or drips, the darker color will often cover it. This method also reduces fine detail work between the colors, because the lighter color will be covered anyway by the darker one where the two colors meet, such as when a wall meets a ceiling.
