A Large Fence Staining Project

Taking a heavily faded fence and bringing it back to virtually new condition
When homeowners in Byhalia, Mississippi first bought their home, the backyard was enclosed by a very large wooden fence that stretched several hundred feet in total. A fence like that is ideal when you have pets and small children as it makes it easier to keep an eye on both your beloved two and four-legged family members.
Over time, however, the sun and the seasons began to take their toll resulting in a faded fence that wasn’t protected from the elements and was inviting both rot and growth on its surface. While it happens very slowly, neglecting to maintain the fence could eventually result in a very large replacement bill at best and an eye-sore at worst.
After meeting with CertaPro of Germantown and discussing their options during a free estimate the decision was made to restain the fence using a semi-solid stain that provided protection and a stronger color profile while leaving some of the natural woodgrain visible.
Before the staining started…
A complete inspection of the fence was carried out to ensure that none of the wood required replacement and that there was no rot along the bottom where the fence was in contact with the lawn and ground. As you can see below the fence was heavily faded overall but more in the area where it received the most sun.
While the work was ongoing…
The entire fence was then power washed to remove dirt and debris and to flush the surface of mold, mildew, and growth that could impact the ability of the stain to be absorbed into the wood grain. With the prep work out of the way, the staining began at the end that had been power washed well in advance to make sure the wood fencing material would be completely dry.
It was then a simple matter of moving along the length of it, first on one side and then the other.
When the paintbrushes were finally set down for the last time…
You can see that the results are dramatic. The fence has a pronounced look to it that is uniform and neat in appearance. The instant dose of curb appeal was apparent from the front but also around the entire back of the house. Inside the fencing, any guest would be impressed at how it transformed the enclosed yard. All that was needed was a bit of lawn furniture and a gas grill!
